Urban Composter Accelerator Refill 1L. An accelerator solution for use with the Urban Composter or Bokashi bucket composting systems. This compost accelerator contains  EM-1 cultures (effective microorganisms) that ferment food scraps allowing them to quickly break down once buried under soil. Use to refill your spray bottle. 1 Litre.

Features

you are making a difference:

  • Return your food scraps to the earth to enrich the soil, reduce waste and reduce carbon emissions.
  • Packaged in recycled plastic.

how does it work:

  • Cut up your food scraps and throw them into the Urban Composter bokashi bucket.
  • Spray Compost Accelerator onto the scraps every time they are added (recommend 3-5 sprays evenly over scraps). Bokashi mix can also be used if desired.
  • Push scraps down to compact the layers each time.
  • Ensure lid is sealed correctly all the way around as air contact may affect the fermentation process.
  • Drain the juice off every few days. This can be diluted (1:100) with water and used as a fertiliser. Alternatively this can be poured down the sink and acts as an organic drain cleaner.
  • Ensure the bucket is left for at least 1-2 weeks after it is full to ensure all contents are fermented. Ensure all juice is drained off.
  • Bury under soil or place on compost heap where it will break down in 4-8 weeks and can be planted into.
  • When emptied clean only with fresh water as this won't harm microbes inside composter.

Brand story

Luke Gregory designed the Urban Composter while studying Industrial Design at university. Luke is passionate about the environment and wanted an easy way to stop food scraps going into landfill.

He didn’t like the fact that most bokashi systems aren’t where you need them. Most people don’t want bokashi composting systems in their kitchen, near food. Luke felt that if people could compost kitchen scraps in their kitchen, using a simple system, more people would do it.

Luke researched an entirely new anaerobic composting method that didn’t require  bokashi bran and discovered that he could use a citrus-based spray with Effective Micro-organisms to start the composting process.

Now Urban Composters come in two sizes, and (as well as the spray bottles) are made from recycled plastic. Has composting ever been this easy?

    I love this product

I use my food scraps and other bits of stalks and certain leaves to ferment and break down in my portable bucket with the compost accelerator and works brilliantly.

Does wonders for my vegie garden

I love the way this product speeds up the whole process of composting. I alternate between burying the contents of my Urban Composting bin in a trench and planting vegetables on top of it, and adding a bin-ful to my compost drum. Both methods work incredibly well. It's great to be able to buy this product in bulk, to reduce packaging waste.

Turned my new clay veggie patch into dark earthy loam

I can't speak highly enough of the Urban Composter system. We moved into a newly built house a few years ago and I wanted a compost system that would work with a new baby in tow (not too complicated, no heavy lifting). I got the small bucket for the kitchen and we spray pretty regularly with the compost accelerator, generally we go two weeks before it's truly full and needs burying in the veggie patch. The microorganisms in the accelerator spray break those food scraps down like you wouldn't believe, I just buried the bucket contents around in successive holes and it would be increasingly rich earthy loamy soil when I got back to the site of the first buried scraps. The spray lasts for ages, 3 years later I'm only now thinking about buying my second refill bottle, original spray bottle and bucket still going fine. Veggie patch is producing well and I get occasional surprise vegetables from seeds from the scraps (so maybe don't dig it in where you don't want random pumpkins for example).

    Will last forever

I have the original spray and this refill and I haven't had to open the refill yet (after around 7 months), so this will keep you going for ages. Does smell, but dissipates once you close the lid on your Bokashi bin.
