A recent study found evidence of PFAS being used in band aids and bandages. Mamavation used an EPA-certified laboratory to independently test for indications of PFAS in 40 bandages and found 26 to contain organic fluorine which is an indicator of forever chemicals known as PFAS.
PFAS chemicals were created to resist stains, heat, oil, water and grease and are used in products like non-stick cookware, textiles and food packaging. In the case of bandages it is believed they are used to make the product waterproof.
Linda Birnbaum (Scientist Emeritus and Former Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program) said in response to the results found in the testing“Because bandages are placed upon open wounds, it’s troubling to learn that they may be also exposing children and adults to PFAS.”
