This Bokashi mix is dried thoroughly so it can be stored for years with no loss of effectiveness. The dry ingredients in the mix are simply a carrier and food source for the micro-organisms which are dormant when dry in the packaging and activate again when added to your waste.

Bokashi ferments the waste in the bokashi bucket, eliminating unpleasant odours. When the waste is buried in the soil, the mix accelerates the breakdown of the waste and adds life and nutrients to the soil. This mix can also be used as a great compost starter!

How to compost with Bokashi mix

1. Place your kitchen waste in the bucket and sprinkle a handful of bokashi mix over every layer of waste. Use approximately one tablespoon of mix for every cup of waste. Use more Bokashi when adding high protein foods, eg meat, fish, cheese and eggs.
2. Check that the lid is closed tightly at all times.
3. Regularly drain the Bokashi juice produced using the tap at the base of the bucket.
4. Repeat this layering process until the Bokashi One bucket is full.
5. Once full, the waste is ready to be buried. (Complete breakdown of the waste and the composting process occurs when it is buried in the soil.)

Is fermenting better than compost?
Compost is a very good source of nutrients for your garden, but because of the composting process, much of the goodness is lost. Fermented waste, however, retains all of the energy (no heat loss) and most of the nutrients in the waste, so that all of this material is available to your plants. Also, fermented waste has the bonus of providing beneficial microbes to your garden, and this will over time produce amazing results.

Is fermenting good for the environment?
Fermenting waste is far better than composting. Greenhouse gas emissions are greatly reduced during fermentation, there are no insect or rodent problems, and the end product is extremely valuable as a soil conditioner and fertiliser. Also, the process retains all the energy (not released to the atmosphere) and all the water is retained and not evaporated.

Bokashi grains should be stored in a cool, dark location and the bag kept airtight.

The airtight lid ensures an ideal environment for anaerobic fermentation to take place.

Within the bucket, a grate efficiently separates food waste, allowing liquid to drain into a catchment area at the bottom. There is a tap for convenient drainage of this liquid.

What Can I Compost?

Almost all kitchen food waste, including fruit and vegetables, prepared foods, cooked and uncooked meats and fish, dairy, eggs, bread, coffee grounds, tea bags, even wilted flowers and tissue.

Do NOT include large bones or excessive amounts of liquid.

1. Filling Process - Place kitchen waste into the Bokashi bucket, Lightly sprinkle with Bokashi One Mix.
2. Airtight Environment - Ensure that the Bokashi Bucket’s lid is tightly closed at all times. This airtight seal creates the ideal conditions for anaerobic fermentation to occur.
3. Fermentation Stage - Inside the sealed bucket, microorganisms in the Bokashi One Mix initiate a fermentation process. During this stage, the waste will reduce in volume significantly as it loses it water content but does not break down.
4. Bokashi 'Juice' Collection - The fermented liquid, known as Bokashi juice, is rich in nutrients and teeming with beneficial microorganisms. This nutrient-rich liquid can be used in your garden or around your home.
5. Emptying Process - To complete the composting process, transfer the fermented waste outside and bury it beneath the soil. In the presence of oxygen, the microorganisms accelerate the breakdown of the waste, supplying nutrients and life to the soil. The breakdown is rapid can be a quick as 3 weeks, due to the microbes in the mix and the fermentation process. Bokashi waste can also be added to conventional composting systems, and worm farms.

Is my Bokashi system working properly?

A good sign that you may notice when the lid is removed is the smell of sweet and sour, like pickles or cider vinegar. A white cotton wool like growth may appear on the surface of the waste, it is also a good sign the fermentation process is working well.
