At Biome, we do all the hard work for you to verify every product for: * truth in labelling *safe ingredients * zero harm to people and animals. We offer all of this transparency so you can make an informed decision and shop with confidence knowing that every product at Biome is safe for you and the planet.
Greenwashing Free + Toxin Free
Twenty years ago, I launched Biome, Australia's original natural and eco living store, because I was fed up with conventional and natural brands using greenwashing to sell their products.
I also couldn't believe that government regulation was so far behind in keeping us safe. There are many cases of toxins being allowed on the market that have since been proven to cause terrible harm.
Biome is different because of what we do not stock, and we are without question the strictest toxin free and eco living store in Australia.
For example, you won't find nail polish at Biome. The "10 free" nail polishes still contain petrochemicals and harmful ingredients.
You won't find any products with palm oil at all, because palm oil is destroying previous rainforest, sending animals to extinction, abusing indigenous rights and contributing to global warming.
All other natural, toxin free stores stock products with palm oil because it is the most widely used ingredient in natural skincare, makeup and cleaning products!
We consult experts and world-leading environmental and toxicity sources to go far beyond what government regulations allow.

Every product at Biome is:
Free from all known or suspected toxins.
Cruelty free – made without exploitation or harm to people or animals.
Natural fibres are Certified Organic, hemp or linen which is grown and processed without chemicals.
Verified for all claims such as 'organic', 'cruelty free', 'bamboo', 'biodegradable.'
Longer lasting than the alternative, thus saving resources and pollution.
Made by a reputable person or business with a story to tell. -
Plus, we consider whether the product and its ingredients are:
Eliminating single use plastic.
Simple and uncomplicated, as close to the natural state as possible.
Made in Australia - less carbon miles and supports local economy.
Grown and manufactured in a sustainable way.
Vegan (98% of products at Biome are vegan).
Packaging free.
Biodegradable.
Recycled or assists recycling.
Resource-efficient or reducing consumption.
Designed to be recycled or responsibly disposed of at the end of its lifeInspiring love for the environment.
Cruelty free needs to be palm oil free. Many brands and stores say they are cruelty free, but we don't feel this claim can be made if palm oil is involved. Palm is used extensively in the personal care industry, but this catastrophic issue is swept under the carpet because the devastation is out of sight and it seems too hard and too costly to give up.
A brand may change ingredients without telling us, despite our request to make sure they do. We regularly audit our products, but should one slip through we remove it immediately from sale. The important thing is that we make a definitive, clear cut public statement to the industry that we will not accept palm oil being used; and that you as a consumer do the same by choosing palm oil free products. There are no wavy lines about being 'sustainable palm oil' at Biome as that is only band-aiding the root cause, which is the escalating demand for palm oil.
