The Ultimate Non-Toxic Baby Essentials Checklist (Australian Guide)

Bringing a baby into the world is magical, messy, and unbelievably overwhelming. One minute you’re choosing a pram, the next you’re Googling “is this baby lotion actually safe?” and falling into a rabbit hole of ingredients you can’t pronounce.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to be an expert in chemistry or buy 57 different baby-branded products. A handful of simple, natural, low-tox essentials is all you need to give your baby a gentle, safe start.

And that’s what this guide is — a calm, fully comprehensive, no-fluff checklist for Australian parents who want fewer chemicals, less plastic, and more confidence.

Everything here reflects what thousands of families have asked us in our Biome stores over the years. The things you actually use. The things worth skipping. And the things nobody warns you about until it’s 2am and you really wish you’d known.

Let’s make this feel simple again.

Baby Skincare Essentials

A baby's skin is thin, permeable, and still developing. Babies absorb more through their skin than adults do, which is why gentle products matter.

Many baby products are fragranced, coloured, or full of unnecessary preservatives and detergents - your baby simply doesn't need them. Fragrance- free, gentle and minimal is best.

Nothing quite compares to that new baby smell - you truly don't know until you know! Keeping products simple and unscented preserves that sweetness just a little longer, and supports bonding (scents are a huge part of how babies recognise parents).

Tip: It’s often recommended for parents to go easy on fragrances in those early months too.  Newborns have especially delicate skin and developing lungs, so minimising scents can help create a gentler environment for them and supports that beautiful early connection.

Gentle Soap or Body Wash

Newborns don't need daily washing- and they definitely don't need bubbles, bright colours, or "tear free" washes (those rely on synthetic agents). Simple, pure ingredients are the way to go.

Biome suggests:
Beauty & the Bees Baby Soap Bar 120g - Jojoba & Olive Oil

Pure olive, jojoba and coconut oils – it’s gentle, rich and unscented.
No detergents, no surprises. Ideal for all skin types, including sensitive or eczema-prone skin.

Four Cow Farm Baby Wash 250ml

Made with rainwater, olive oil & echinacea extract. A soothing, handmade, small-batch wash for hair, face, and body.

All-Purpose Baby Balm

Your everything-product: every parent needs one of these handy! Use for dry cheeks, skin folds, cradle cap, nappy area, even itchy patches.

Biome's suggestion:
Nature's child certified organic wonder balm
Organic, beeswax-based, with calendula and olive oil. Can help remedy a range of skin irritations. Deeply soothing, no petrochemicals, suitable for the whole family.

Simple, Pure Baby Oil

Great for massage, softening cradle cap and nourishing dry areas.

Biome's Suggestion:
Biome Be.UNITY 100% Jojoba Oil Australian 100ml

Purely cold pressed high quality jojoba oil grown in Queensland without pesticides. Incredibly close to the skin’s natural oils, allowing the oil to be super multi-purpose for babies and adults alike.

Sun Protection (3 months+)

Sun safety is one of those little but important routines - especially with delicate baby skin. When you’re heading outdoors, mineral-based, gentle sunscrens are safest when sun exposure is unavoidable.

Biome Suggests:
Wotnot Palm Oil-Free Natural Sunscreen SPF30 3-months+
Mineral-based, gentle, broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. Free from synthetic fragrances, parabens, and petrochemicals. For babies from 3 months.

Nappy-time Essentials

You’re going to spend a lot of time here (you’ll see)- so reducing chemicals and plastics goes a longg way. A baby's skin is most delicate in the nappy area, and constant moisture can obviously make it even more sensitive, so keeping nappy changes frequent and using gentle products helps keep their skin protected.

Nappy time can also become a small moment of connection- slowing down for a minute, making eye contact or singing a song can turn an everyday (not so favoured) task into a sweet daily ritual for you both.

Tip:  Nappy-free time is one of the simplest ways to keep baby's skin happy and comfortable.

    Barrier Balm

Skip scented creams with long ingredient lists. Your baby just needs a simple moisture barrier.

    Biome's Suggestion:
    Biome CastorBub™

A rich, 100% natural barrier cream made with castor oil and zinc oxide for soothing and protection. Versatile balm great for bottoms, cheeks, chafing, dry patches, irritation. One product, many uses.

    Talc-Free Powder

For extra dryness, especially in warmer weather, without the harmful chemicals in traditonal talc.

    Biome Suggests:
    Nature's Child Baby Powder 100 g

Talc-free, organic powder made with food-grade tapioca starch and white clay. Helps absorb moisture and reduce friction in nappy folds. Use lightly.

Tip: Use a barrier balm for general protection at most nappy changes, and sprinkle a light dusting of powder only when extra dryness is needed, such as during hot days or after longer naps.

    Cloth Nappies

Reusable nappies have come a long way. Modern cloth nappies are practical, adjustable, comfortable and sustainable, catering to every baby's needs.

Every family and every baby is different so we recommend to start with one or two to see what suits your baby and routine before investing in a whole set.

    Biome's Suggestion:
Eco Naps Modern Cloth Nappy 2.0

One-size design fits from approx. 3.5–16kg, adjustable as your baby grows.  The waterproof outer helps keep leaks contained and the soft bamboo lining keeps your baby dry and comfortable. Customisable absorption and snap buttons make nappy changes quick and easy.

You can also find nappy liners, night-time nappies and swim nappies, or explore the whole range here.

    Reusable Wipes

Disposable wipes often contain synthetic fibres, preservatives, fragrances, and plastics - which can irritate delicate baby skin and contribute to landfill. A few high-quality reusable wipes cover all your needs: nappy changes, dribble, quick face or hand wipes, or even cleaning up small spills. Soft, eco-friendly, and cost-effective.

    Biome's Suggestion:
Nature's Child reusable baby wipes (certified organic cotton) 8 pk

100% certified organic cotton, super-soft and absorbent. Ideal for nappy changes, dribble, or everyday cleanups. Use dry, wet with water or with a tiny drop of castile soap, then wash and reuse.

    Change Mat

A good change mat makes nappy time easier, cleaner, and more comfortable - at home or on the go. Choose natural fibres where possible.

    Biome's Suggestion:
EcoNaps Travel Bamboo Rayon Velour Change Mat

Soft bamboo is gentle on newborn skin and the waterproof backing keeps clothes, bags, and surfaces dry. Compact and rollable, it fits easily into a nappy bag, car, or stroller. Reusable and low-waste.

    Reusable Wet/ Nappy bags

Great for keeping cloth nappies and wipes contained when you’re out and about.

    Biome's Suggestion:
    EcoNaps Pod Wet Bag
Water and odour-resistant, leak-proof, and fits up to 8 cloth nappies or a combination of nappies, wipes, snacks and more. Snap-handle loops over a pram, bag, or hook for easy access, and it’s washable.

    Bathing and Grooming Essentials

Bath time doesn’t need to be complicated. Most babies don’t need daily baths - a gentle splash a few times a week is enough. Aim for calm, slow, and enjoyable, and remember: sometimes a change of scenery or a warm cuddle is more soothing than any bath product.

Tip: A midwife once shared: if nothing seems to calm your little one, try taking them outside or putting them in water -sometimes a simple change of scenery is all it takes. And yes, the same goes for parents - a shower can feel like a tiny reset! (How good does a shower feel?!)

    Natural Fibre Washcloths/ Sponge

Soft, breathable, and free from microplastics - perfect for delicate newborn skin. Gentle fibres reduce irritation, and natural materials are kinder to both baby and the environment. Ideal for bath time, quick little washes between baths or even applying baby oil and balm without friction.

    Biome Suggests:

    Reusable Face Wipes
100% certified organic cotton, soft and absorbent. Perfect for gentle face and hand wipes. Use dry or wet with water for a low-waste alternative to disposable face wipes.

     Baby Brush

A natural wooden comb is soft on delicate hair, ideal for newborns and toddlers. It gently detangles fine hair without pulling, promotes healthy scalp circulation, and helps distribute natural oils. Regular gentle brushing can also help with cradle cap and can be a calming part of your bonding and bedtime routine.

    Biome Suggests:
    Wooden Baby Comb
Handcrafted from FSC-certified Beechwood, it's soft, rounded teeth are gentle on delicate scalps.

    Bath Mat

Once your baby starts sitting, and especially when they become a busy, splash-happy toddler, a bath mat can make bath time safer and more comfortable.

    Biome Suggests:
EverEco Baby Natural Baby Bath Mat
Made from 100% natural rubber (hevea trees), coloured with organic pigments, and free from PVC, BPA, EVA, phthalates and other toxins. Suction grips on the bottom help keep the mat secure in the bath or shower - giving you peace of mind while little ones splash around.

    Oral Care

Even before teeth appear, gentle oral care helps keep gums healthy and sets up good habits early. Avoid conventional gels with synthetic ingredients or alcohol, or fluoride until recommended.

    Biome Suggests:
Dr Hisham's Natural Oral Care Baby Teeth Serum
Plant-based, gentle serum for sensitive gums. Use a small amount on a clean finger or soft brush to massage gums. Once teeth appear, it can continue to protect, soothe, and maintain oral hygiene alongside a baby toothbrush.

    Biome Bamboo Toothbrush Kids

    Bath Thermometer

Choose silicone or stainless options; avoid mercury-style plastic strips.

    Feeding Essentials

Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or getting ready to dive into the messy fun of solids (or already knee-deep in tiny food disasters), feeding your little one is full of firsts! First tastes, first spills, and first “I did it!” moments. Some days it’s pure magic, other days… let’s just say your floor, your clothes, and occasionally your hair, are part of the meal too.

Keeping things simple and low-tox can help take the pressure off and make mealtime calmer and safer so you can both enjoy the adventure withour worrying about hidden nasties.

Tip: Let your baby explore textures, tastes, and even a little mess. Dribbles, splashes,  and enthusiastic spoon-waving are a normal and honestly, pretty adorable(!) part of developmeing independence at mealtimes.

    Glass Baby Bottles

Durable, non-toxic, and easy to sterilise. A staple for bottle-feeding or mixed feeding.

    Biome Suggests:
Baby Quoddle Bottle Pack – Slow Flow 150ml or Medium Flow 300ml
Completely plastic free, made from borosilicate glass and pure hevea rubber teats. Free from hardening agents and any harmful chemical compounds, with a shape that supports both bottle and combo feeding. Handy sizes for newborns through to older babies.

    Biome Suggests:

    Plates, Bowls & Utensils

Choose non-plastic alternatives like stainless steel, silicone, or recycled materials. Divided plates help to balance meals, minimise spills, and can make meals easier for little ones who like foods kept separate.

    Clothing and bedding essentials

Your baby will spend most of their little life (at least in the beginning!) snuggled up against something soft - your chest, a wrap, a mattress, a blanket, your T-shirt.

Fabrics matter more than we often realise. Choosing breathable, natural fibres keeps them comfy, calm, and protected. They help regulate temperature, reduce irritation, and avoid the sneaky chemicals often found in synthetic fabrics or coatings.

Think of this section as building a cosy little “nest” for your baby -simple, natural, safe and oh-so snuggly.

    Natural Fibre Swaddles

Wraps become almost an extension of your arms in those early weeks. You'll use them for everything: swaddling, feeding, pram naps, shade, cuddles, catching the occasional milky spill… the list goes on.

    Biome Suggests:

Snug As A Bub Co Organic Swaddle
Breathable, GOTS‑certified cotton swaddle perfect for wrapping, cuddling, tummy time blankets, or even as a light stroller cover.

    100% Organic Cotton Muslin Swaddle

    Organic Cotton Clothing

There's something about snuggling a tiny human in soft, breathable fabrics that just feels.. right.

Whenever possible, go for GOTS-certified pieces - it’s the gold standard for organic cotton and a little reassurance that what’s touching your baby’s skin is truly safe.

Biome’s selection includes beautifully made onesies, rompers, and wraps from small Australian makers who care just as much about softness and simplicity as you do.

    Natural Fibre Bedding

Your little one spends a huge chunk of their day sleeping, dreaming, and growing -so their sleep space deserves a bit of love. It doesn’t need to be fancy, just safe, breathable, and toxin-free.

Organic cotton bedding creates a cosy, natural base that supports comfortable sleep.  Because let’s be honest- sleep is golden… on the nights it actually happens!

    Toy & Playtime Essentials

Babies don’t need a mountain of toys, quality over quantity is the golden rule. The right toys engage their senses, encourage movement, and support development without cluttering your home or exposing them to unnecessary chemicals.

Tip: Rotate a few carefully chosen toys to keep things fresh. A few well-chosen items are all you need to spark curiosity, comfort, and play.

      Home & Air-Quality Essentials

Off-gassing from furniture, lingering synthetic fragrances, and stuffy rooms can all add up, even if it's not obvious. A few simple tweaks can make your home feel fresher, lighter, and more comfortable for everyone.

Keeping the air fresh, gentle, and low on chemicals helps support their developing bodies and gives you one less thing to worry about while you cuddle, soothe, and enjoy these early days.

      Ventilation

Open windows daily. It’s free, effective, and the simplest way to keep fresh air circulating. Bonus points if you can do a little morning stretch by the nursery window while you’re at it. Fresh air can make all the difference for both baby and grown-ups!

      Skip Synthetic Fragrances

Air fresheners, plug-in diffusers, scented candles with synthetic scents… they might smell nice, but most contain phthalates and synthetics. Not ideal for tiny lungs.

      Biome alternatives:

      Air Purifiers

A small investment can make a big difference. Look for a purifier with a HEPA filter to trap dust, allergens, and fine particles. Great for nurseries, bedrooms, and play spaces.

      Low-VOC Paints & Finishes

Repainting the nursery or buying new furniture? Low-VOC paints and natural finishes reduce chemical exposure and make off-gassing less of a worry.

      Let New Furniture Breathe

If possible, let new furniture off-gas outside or in a garage for a few days before bringing it into the nursery. Your baby’s lungs will thank you.

      Cleaning around baby

Babies are busy exploring, touching, and tasting everything... everything!! That’s half the joy and half the chaos. Gentle, natural cleaning products help keep their little world fresh and safe without the harsh chemicals or residues left behind on the surfaces they crawl on, mouth on, or try to 'help' you wipe.

A clean home doesn’t need to smell like chemicals, the aim is for fresh, light, and clean, where your baby can take happy breaths and you feel confident about what’s touching their skin, clothes, and toys.

Biome Suggests: EcoMax Wool Dryer Balls
Naturally reduce drying time and soften fabrics without any added chemicals, perfect for delicate baby clothing.

If it sheds microplastics, smells like “baby powder”, or comes with a huge list of ingredients -you probably don’t need it.

A final word (and a deep breath)

You do not need a cupboard full of specialist baby products to raise a healthy, happy little human.

You don’t need perfection, either. Just a few conscious choices that keep things simple, natural, and gentle. Use this guide as a reference, not a to-do list. Pick what helps, skip what doesn’t. Baby steps, literally.

And remember - if you ever want help choosing non-toxic essentials, our team in-store and online genuinely loves guiding new parents without pressure or overwhelm. It’s what Biome has always done best.
