• DIY Castor Oil Eye Drops

Did you know castor oil eye drops can be used to treat a range of eye ailments? Castor oil encourages lipid production in the eyes and inhibits the evaporation of tears. It contains a range of powerful fatty acids and other antioxidants that can benefit your eyes, and is antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. It also stimulates our immune system.

The thought of applying oil directly into the eyes may sound a bit unusual or scary to some, however when used in the right way, castor oil eye drops are safe, gentle and effective for a range of eye ailments. It is however, very important to choose the right type of castor oil. The only type of castor oil you should use in this instance is one that is 100% organic, hexane free, has no other ingredients added to it, and is sterile. Biome’s castor oil is just this. Our organic castor oil is hexane free and does not undergo a solvent extraction process. You can find it here >

Store your castor oil in a sterile, glass jar and use a glass eye dropper. It is best to avoid plastic in this instance. We used this jar and this dropper.

When To Avoid Castor Oil Eye Drops

    • If redness or irritation occurs after application, stop use.
    • If blurry vision lasts longer than a few minutes, stop use.
    • Before or while wearing contact lenses. Those with contact lenses should apply the castor oil at night after removing contacts, waiting at least 12 hours before inserting them again.
    • For those with a serious eye condition, who have undergone recent eye surgery, or use prescription eye drop medication, always consult your doctor before using. Do not discontinue prescription medication without consulting with your doctor first.
    • Do not use castor oil and over the counter eye drops simultaneously. Wait 12 hours after applying the castor oil to use over the counter eye drops.

How To Apply Castor Oil Eye Drops

    1. Before bed is the best time for applying castor oil eye drops. Make sure your eyes are clean, dry, and free from makeup, and remove contact lenses.
    2. Tilt your head back slightly and apply 1-3 drops directly into each eye. Blink a couple of times. Your vision may turn blurry for a second, but will return to normal shortly after.
    3. Close your eyes and gently massage on and around the eye. Allow the oil to soak into the eye and around the eye area.
    4. Wait 12 hours before inserting contact lenses or applying other eye drops.
    5. Use on a consistent, nightly basis for best results.
    6. Use during the day as needed for instant relief of dry, itchy, red eyes.
