A cherished Aboriginal healing herb, Gumbi Gumbi occurs naturally around the semi-arid regions of Australia, particularly in South Australia and New South Wales. With a herbal and slightly grassy flavour, this traditional medicine is best steeped as a tea. Infuse 1tsp per 250ml of boiling water, and steep for 10 minutes.

Recipe Ideas

Gumbi Gumbi Tea (Traditional Infusion): Steep 1–2 teaspoons of dried Gumbi Gumbi leaves in hot water for 5–10 minutes. Strain and enjoy as a calming herbal tea. Add a slice of lemon or a drizzle of native honey to soften the bitterness.

Immune Support Tonic: Combine brewed Gumbi Gumbi tea with Lemon Myrtle, Ginger, and a splash of native honey for a warming, immune-boosting tonic. Enjoy warm or chilled over ice.

Bush Medicine Iced Tea: Brew Gumbi Gumbi tea with Davidson Plum or Rosella for a refreshing and tart iced tea. Serve chilled with fresh mint and lemon slices.

Wellness Blend with Native Herbs: Mix dried Gumbi Gumbi with Anise Myrtle, Lemon Myrtle, and Rivermint to create your own native tea blend. Brew and serve hot or cold for a soothing digestive tea.

Herbal Broth Base: Use a mild Gumbi Gumbi infusion as a base for soups or broths- especially for clear vegetable or bone broths. It brings earthy, cleansing notes and pairs well with native greens.

Detox Smoothie Boost: Add 2–3 tablespoons of cooled Gumbi Gumbi tea to a green smoothie. Combine with spinach, green apple, cucumber, and the pulp of your favourite native citrus for a refreshing detox blend.

Nutritional Aspects

Rich in Antioxidants: Gumbi Gumbi contains powerful antioxidants, including saponins and flavonoids, which help combat oxidative stress in the body. These compounds may support immune health and reduce inflammation.

Immune-Boosting Properties: Traditionally used by Indigenous Australians to support the immune system, Gumbi Gumbi is believed to have antimicrobial and antiviral qualities, potentially helping the body fight off illness and infection.

Supports Detoxification: Some studies and traditional uses suggest that Gumbi Gumbi may assist in liver detoxification processes and overall cellular health, although more scientific research is needed to confirm these effects.

Anti-Inflammatory Compounds: Gumbi Gumbi contains naturally occurring compounds that may contribute to reducing inflammation in the body, supporting joint and gut health.

Traditional Medicinal Use: While not a conventional "nutrient," Gumbi Gumbi has been used for generations in traditional bush medicine for its holistic properties, including support for fatigue, skin health, and general wellbeing.

Low in Calories: As a dried herbal ingredient or infusion, Gumbi Gumbi is extremely low in calories, making it suitable for teas, tonics, and health blends without adding excess energy to the diet.
