Biome Naked Beauty Bar - Homemade Bug & Mosquito Repellent

As with many common household and beauty items, a natural bug and mosquito repellent can be made inexpensively at home, using simple, natural ingredients.

This bug and mosquito repellent is based on apple cider vinegar and a combination of herbs that have been known for their antibacterial, antiviral, antiseptic, and antifungal properties for centuries. In fact, according to Wellnessmama.com these herbs in this combination were used by the four thieves during the Bubonic Plague. The thieves survived, as with the recipe for this herbal vinegar.

    Recipe adapted from www.wellnessmama.com

    • 2-4 cups of pure and unrefined apple cider vinegar (make as little or as much as you like)
    • 2 tablespoons each of dried sage, rosemary, lavender, thyme and mint
    • 12 drops each of sage, rosemary, lavender and thyme essential oils

    1. Put the apple cider vinegar and dried herbs into a mason jar. Push the herbs down so they are covered by the liquid. Put the lid on the mason jar and store in a cool dry place out of the sun for 1-2 weeks. Each day, give the jar a shake.
    2. After 1-2 weeks, strain the herbs using a fine sieve, garni bag or nut milk bag. You may need to do this a few times to ensure all the herbs have been strained out.
    3. Add your essential oils to the stained apple cider vinegar solution.
    4. Fill your spray bottles (glass spray bottles are preferred). For a 100ml spray bottle, fill with approximately 1/4 cup of the apple cider vinegar solution or more if you require a stronger mix. Fill the remainder of the bottle to the top with distilled water.  Give the bottle a good shake. Keep in a cool, dry spot out of direct sunlight. Keep any excess in the fridge and top your bottles up when needed. If refrigerated, use within 6 months.

    How to Use

Shake well before each use. Spray this mosquito repellent sparingly into the air of your surroundings or onto your skin whenever you need protection from mosquitoes, sandflies, midgies, and other bugs.

Note: As this is quite a strong mixture of ACV and essential oils, it is not suitable for use on children under six. Do not spray this natural mosquito repellent on face or other delicate areas.

Apple cider vinegar has a strong smell, though when it’s infused with the herbs, the smell becomes much less obvious.

    If irritation occurs, discontinue use.
