Gulbarn (the brand) is cofounded by Samara Billy and Enterprise Learning Projects (ELP), a not-for-profit organisation based in the Northern Territory. Samara has lived in Minyerri all of her life and has been actively involved in spearheading the Minyerri Arts and Cultural Centre as well as being the driving force behind the development of the Gulbarn business. She’s passionate about creating opportunities for the young people in Minyerri, including her three daughters Jayzena, Ashlene and Letty. ELP was started by Laura Egan to support remote Aboriginal communities to share culture and achieve their aspirations through enterprise.
In 2013, Laura was invited to Minyerri to discuss enterprise opportunities. When Laura mentioned she had a cold, a cup of Gulbarn was offered as a remedy - a kind gesture which has resulted in a successful and collaborative partnership for over seven years. Samara introduced her to the magic taste of Gulbarn leaves and a business was born.
