Autumn Seasonal Eating

When fruits and vegetables have been harvested in season, it means they:

  • have been naturally ripened on the plant,
  • will be much fresher,
  • have a better flavour,
  • are typically more nutritious, and
  • cost less.

In season produce is generally grown, harvested and available for you to enjoy within a shorter period of time. They haven't been artificially ripened, so it's more nutrient-dense, and because the produce is in peak supply, there is no need for growers to extend the 'season' in greenhouses. Seasonal vegetables, fruits and herbs are at the height of their freshness and flavour, so your meals will taste so much better!

Choosing in season produce means you'll be supporting your local growers and the economy in the most delicious way possible.

Autumn Fruits In Australia

So many fruits love cooler autumn weather. Fruits in season in Autumn, and at their most delicious, include apples, pear, peach, plum, rhubarb, pomegranate, watermelon, lemon, lime, mandarin, orange, figs, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and avocado.

To harvest your own, you will have to plan a few years ahead, so with fruits most of us will be heading to purchase at the market!

Autumn fruits in Australia are some of the most delicious, and lend themselves perfectly to a range of desserts, pies, jams and preserves.  It's a great time to buy fruits while in season and then ferment, pickle, preserve or make jam.

They even work well when combined with typically savoury foods. Spinach salad with pear and walnuts for example, or roasted cauliflower with pomegranate.
