Staying upbeat and positive during COVID-19

Like most, the Biome workplace has changed dramatically over the last few months. We are extremely thankful to be living in Australia in safe, healthy homes and to be part of a positive, proactive workplace. However, with many of us working in busy, social distanced conditions, some suffering loss of hours, and others working from home, barely venturing out, we've all been looking at ways to stay positive and upbeat during this tumultuous time. There is much research that shows that staying positive is a core ingredient in helping to cope with the stress around us. (1) Read on as we share what we've been up to.

Self care Sunday's

"I've been gardening, trying different workouts I've never tried before like pilates, and every week I have a 'self-care Sunday' where I pamper myself for a few hours in the afternoon with a hair treatment, home facial and quiet time." - Mia

Make your own preserves

Did you know spending time in the kitchen can ease stress and restlessness, and enhance mindfulness? Any wonder a few of us have been spending a bit more time in the kitchen of late trying out new things, including the humble preserve. Jams and relishes are cheap and easy to make with some pantry basics, fruit and veggies, plus the end result is really satisfying and tasty! Give any extra jars to neighbours, family and friends to brighten their day. We love this simple CWA tomato relish recipe:
  1. Add 1.5kg chopped tomatoes and 500g chopped onions to a tray, sprinkle with 2 Tbs of salt and leave for 12 hours.
  2. After 12 hours, drain liquid from tray, add tomatoes and onions to a stock pot with 2 cups of brown vinegar and boil for 5 mins.
  3. Add 1 Tbs curry powder, 1 Tbs mustard powder and 1/4 tsp of pepper, stir and boil for 45 mins.
  4. Add 2 cups of sugar and boil for a further 45 mins.
  5. Bottle and seal relish while still hot. Store in a cool, dark place and refrigerate once open.

Learn a new language

We've also been using this time learn new languages! Learning a new language is a great challenge, helping us to keep our minds focused, active, healthy and improve mental wellbeing. It also provides a great escape from stressful situations. One of us has been learning Italian and another of us has been learning Hindi using the Duolingo app. There are a quite a few free language apps available now, plus there is always YouTube or maybe a multilingual friend or family member can help.
