We are experiencing a great deal of interest in our Southern Cross Pottery ceramic water purifiers - both from those people who wish to remove chlorine and other bad tastes from their tap water and those who are not happy about their local Council putting fluoride in the water supply. It's an important purchasing decision and here are some of the most frequently asked questions: Do these water purifiers include the appropriate filter?- The 6L, 9L and 12L all include one high quality ceramic, carbon core super sterasyl filter that lasts 1000 litres (approx. 6 months).
- The 10L Ultra Chic includes one ceramic, carbon core filter that lasts 2000 litres (approx. 12 months).
- The Fluoride Reduction includes three filters – 1 Australis Carbon Filter candle (12 month/2000L) plus 2 x New Millennium Concepts PF-4 Fluoride Filter candle (6 month/1000L)
What is removed by these water filters? You can find our more about the Australis ceramic filter candles and what is removed by visiting the Australis website.
Are the filters super sterasyl and what is a super sterasyl filter? Yes, the Australis and Royal Doulton filters are both Super Sterasyl, which uses a granular activated carbon instead of an activated carbon block in order to give superior flow rates in a gravity filter. With its Absolute filtration rating defined as >99.99% of 0.9 microns super sterasyl is highly effective against particulate contamination, pathogenic bacteria, cysts etc, with the additional benefit of chlorine and organics removal capabilities.
Do I need to clean the filter? If the filter starts to look dirty simply scrape the cartridge under running water. Once the surface is white, the cartridge is ready for use again.
How often do I need to change the filter? They last either approximately six months or 12 months depending on the purifer you buy. Biome supplys both the six and 12 moth replacements.
Are replacement filters available? Yes, you can find them on our website here: replacement water filters
What are the purifiers made from? They are ceramic water filters which is clay that is glazed and fired to create a coloured, smooth surface. The inside is a non-porous waterproof glaze. Unlike terracotta, this ceramic vessel will not grow mould or become stained or leave a taste in your water.
The Fluoride water-purifier filter says it uses a filter with a cartridge containing activated alumina. Isn't aluminium bad for me? Alumina is a completely different compound to aluminium. Activated alumina is widely used to remove fluoride from drinking water. The amount of fluoride leached from the water being filtered depends on how long the water is actually touching the alumina filter media. Basically, the more alumina in the filter, the less fluoride will be in the final, filtered water. See the Fluoride reduction water filter.
Does the Flouride reduction purifier come in a smaller size? As shown below, because it has two filters (both super sterasyl and fluoride reduction) the purifier needs to be tall to fit both filters, so it is only available in the 18L size.
