The Environmental Toothbrush is a simple solution to reducing the 30 million plastic toothbrushes that are disposed of annually in Australia. (Please note: hard plastics that are not containers such as toys and toothbrushes can not be recycled through standard household recycling programs.)

Made from solid MOSO bamboo, this Bamboo Toothbrush handle will biodegrade in compost rather than landfill.

*About the bristles: The bristles are made from Nylon 6 and thus this toothbrush is not 100% plastic free nor 100% biodegradable.  For those seeking a completely plastic-free brush, the only option is animal hair bristle. It is not possible to make a bristle from 100% bamboo or plant oil (there will be some amount of petrochemical binder).  Before composting, remove the bristles and place in your bin.

you are making a difference:

  • Reduce the amount of non-biodegradable plastic entering landfills each year.  At the end of its life, the bamboo toothbrush handle will biodegrade into your garden soil or compost without pollution (first remove the bristles and place in bin).
  • Bamboo is renewable timber that grows without the use of pesticides - far preferable to a plastic handle made from non-renewable, polluting petrochemicals.
  • Environmental Toothbrush is an Australian owned company.

features:

  • Heat-treated to carbonise the surface of the bamboo providing water-resistance and preventing the growth of microbes.
  • Bristles made from a synthetic Nylon 6 resistant to microbial growth during normal use, to ensure safety and durability.
  • Packaged in recycled cardboard box.

Available in three styles - adult soft, adult medium and child's soft, plus charcoal toothbrush bristles.

Title : Light in the hand
Comment : Unusual feel the first time you use this light in the hand toothbrush. I like the shape of the head and will definitely buy again.

Title : Great that it's biodegradable, not as good as the charcoal toothbrush
Comment : Unfortunately I'm not a huge fan of this toothbrush - the charcoal one is much better! The head on this brush is quite large, and the soft bristles really aren't all that soft, so it does make cleaning my back teeth quite tricky and painful at times. The charcoal toothbrush also has nice tapered bristles to get under the gum whereas this one doesn't, so I'm not getting nearly as thorough a clean this time. Worth a try, but will be going back to the charcoal next time I buy. On the plus side the bamboo handle is really comfortable and well crafted - no splinters or shredding like I've had on previous brushes.

Title : Composted effectively
Comment : I love that these cost the same as a plastic toothbrush but the packaging and handle are zerowaste. My gums and teeth can be sensitive and the soft bristles are great. It's a shame the bristles themselves aren't also biodegradable, but I just separated the head from the handle using secateurs and put the handle into my bokashi compost. No sign of it when I buried my next round of compost.

Title : Bamboo Toothbrush - it's a goer ;-)
Comment : I used this for the first time this morning. It felt a little awkward as the shape is obviously very different, but it did a great job and I'll continue to use these as well as try them for my small children.

Title : Great toothbrush
Comment : Excellent plastic-free alternative to normal toothbrushes, so glad to have found something like this. Not to mention cheaper than a lot of the toothbrushes you'd normally buy from Coles etc. It's got a good small head as well which I prefer in a toothbrush as you can get a better clean!

Title : Great alternative brush to regular plastic
Comment : Thanks in part to Biome I'm learning how to reduce my plastic use, and this bamboo toothbrush is a great alternative to the cheap plastic brushes that end up in landfill. Never going back.

Title : An easy choice to reduce my plastic footprint
Comment : I wish I discovered these toothbrushes years ago ...who needs plastic toothbrushes! I wish the bristles weren't plastic, but at the moment this brand is the best of the bunch! The soft bristles are gentle on gums yet strong enough to be effective on cleaning teeth, and last as long as normal toothbrushes. When you are finished with them they are perfect to clean hard-to-reach places such as bathroom grout etc then pop into the compost!

Title : Great alternative to plastic
Comment : These are nice toothbrushes to use, with very soft bristles. They come with minimal packaging and it all recyclable.

Title : Great product to reduce plastic use!
Comment : Excellent product, I've been using these for about a year now. I believe they do just as good a job as a normal toothbrush, with a huge amount less plastic. My dentist thinks they work fine too. They can't rest in water (like that in the bottom of a cup etc) when not being used though, just keep elevated or dry off.

Title : Simple and effective
Comment : These toothbrushes are simple and effective. I loved that they dried entirely within a few hours which minimises bacteria growth, rinsed easily without toothpaste build up at the bottom of the bristles and I could chuck it into the compost at the end of life. As they are all one colour I simply dipped the bottom of the handle into food dye to distinguish between family members. They are cheaper than conventional toothbrushes and I did not miss any of the 'extras' that often come with standard plastic toothbrushes.
