As of 2021, Australia has over 1,800 species of flora and fauna listed as threatened or endangered. This includes over 500 animal species, such as the Tasmanian devil, the southern corroboree frog, and the numbat, as well as over 1,300 plant species, such as the Wollemi pine, the orange-bellied parrot, and the Christmas bells.

The main threats to these species of fauna and flora include habitat loss and degradation, invasive species, climate change, and disease.  Hundreds of organisations are involved with conservation to protect and restore these species and their habitats, but we all need to help ensure the survival of Australia's unique flora and fauna.

When people purchase and use eco-friendly gifts that feature Australian wildlife and plant species, they are reminded of the beauty and diversity of these species and the urgent need to protect them.

What is special about Australia's Flora and Fauna?

The fauna & flora of the Australian continent are special because of their unique characteristics that have evolved over millions of years in isolation. Our plant and animal species have evolved distinctively different from those found elsewhere in the world, resulting in a high degree of endemism, meaning they are found nowhere else on the planet.

One of the most unique features of Australia's flora is the dominance of woody plants, especially the eucalyptus tree, which has over 700 species and covers a vast area of the continent. Our flora also includes many endemic species such as the kangaroo paw, the waratah, and the bottlebrush.

The fauna of Australia is equally fascinating, with over 80% of the mammals, reptiles, and amphibians found in the country being endemic. Some of the most iconic Australian animals include kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, echidnas, and platypus. Additionally, Australia is home to many unique and unusual animal species, such as the Tasmanian devil, the numbat, and the bilby.

Australia's flora and fauna also play a vital role in the ecological and cultural identity of the country. Many species are important for traditional uses by First Nations people, including as food, medicine, and tools.

Flora and fauna are also provide essential ecosystem services for each biome across the country in such as pollination, seed dispersal, and nutrient cycling.

In summary, Australia's flora and fauna are special due to their unique and diverse characteristics, high degree of endemism, and vital ecological and cultural roles. They are essential components of Australia's identity and provide valuable ecosystem services that benefit the planet as a whole.
