90+ washloads. That Red House certified organic Soapberries (also called Soap Nuts) are the natural alternative to traditional fabric softeners and laundry detergents. Can also be used as a concentrated all purpose liquid soap. The dried shell of the fruit of the Sapindus Mukorossi tree is exceptionally high in 'saponin' which is nature's soap.  Straight from nature to your home!

You are making a difference:

  • Supporting the 'Grow Nepal' initiative which creates a future for the Nepalese people, and protecting the trees helps reduce deforestation in the Himalayas.
  • Reducing pollution by using a raw plant product with almost no processing or packaging and that is fully compostable.
  • Completely chemical free, grey water safe, septic safe.
  • No plastic bottle - calico bag can be reused and soap nuts can be composted at the end of use.

Intructions for use:

  • Place the equivalent of five whole soap berry shells in the small cotton bag provided.
  • Add bag to normal washload and remove when finished.
  • Use warmer water for heavily soiled loads (40-60 degrees).
  • Re-use the same shells for approx. four more loads.
  • If you prefer a scent on your laundry, pop a few drops of your favourite essential oil on the wash bag (such as lavender or eucalyptus).
  • When finished, shells are thin and brittle, at which point they can be added to your compost to break down naturally.
  • You can also make a multi-purpose liquid by boiling the berries for 15 minutes, and use the liquid for anything, from shampoo to a cleaner.

  • Money saving. Soap nuts cost around 10c per wash load for a 1kg bag. Compared to conventional washing powders, they can save you a great deal over the course of a year. Data supplied by That Red House.
  • Hypo-allergenic. Perfect for those with sensitive skin or allergies.
  • Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and odorless.
  • Packaged in resuable draw string bag with small wash bag.
  • Not tested on animals.
  • Safe for babies and children.

Good alternative, can be adapted for good front-loader performance

I have a front loader, so putting them in the little baggy doesn't work as well (less water around, so the berries don't release the sapponins as well, also I wash in cold water which doesn't help). Instead I've been boiling a few berries in water for 20 min, then I use the liquid as my detergent with a couple drops of essential oil just for fragrance. For less hassle, I do a big batch and freeze it in ice cube trays, then just put a few in the soap tray of the machine each load. With this method, they're doing great and I will definitely be back for more once mine eventually run out!

Clothes not clean!

I got a trial packet of these with the plastic free July bundle and was very disappointed with the performance. When I was hanging my clothes to dry, I noticed that my husband's shirts still smell dirty. Having read other reviews, it seems the berries do not have good performance in front loaders (which I have) or with a cold wash (which I use).
Very happy with customer service by Biome though.

Can not recommend highly enough

I LOVE these soap berries! I add a few drops of orange essential oils to my wash and everything is coming out beautifully. I've also used the recipes on the 'that red house' website for the cleaning products - currently loving the general all purpose cleaner and the glass cleaner! I've found a recipe for homemade shampoo as well using these soap berries, I'll be trying that next!

Best enviro detergent yet

Well, these get significant blood stains out of clothes if washed the same day, which is impressive! However, they do not perform miracles on texta marks and grass stains. Work really well in top loaders with lots of water sloshing around (not great if you jam all the towels in), cold water is fine. I don't think the maths is quite right - 250g does more like 45 loads if you use 6 berries per bag for 3 loads before you compost them, which is 50 cents ish per load, much better than the $1 per load for more expensive eco detergents. Leave berries in the bag in a jar of water between loads. You can do a no rinse cycle if your machine allows it because the berries are low residue, but they do leave a faint (not unpleasant) smell on your clothes if you have a decent sense of smell. It is recommended that you boil them up to make a liquid if you have a front loader, because of the amount of water used by front loaders. Have to consider the carbon footprint of importing them and the cartons will be sprayed by quarantine, obviously, although very little should get to the product itself. In general - awesome, we are converted!
