The Brand Story:

Swedish Stockings was founded to tackle the problem of textile waste and pollution within the hosiery industry. Using innovative methods and technologies, Swedish Stockings has carved a space for themselves as front runners in the sustainable hosiery market due to their use of recycled yarns, post-dying water treatments and eco friendly dyes. Their products are made in solar powered factories in Italy.

"Each year, two billion pairs of tights are produced, worn a few times and then discarded. This is just another reason why fashion is one of the most polluting industries in the world. Landfills everywhere are full of poorly made and cheap non-biodegradable textiles – and it’s getting worse.

Nylon yarn, which is currently used to produce most modern pantyhose, is created from an environmentally harmful petroleum-based manufacturing process that is not only bad for the planet, but also produces pantyhose that don’t last.

These harmful practices in the fashion industry are all too common. we believe the world needs more innovative and environmentally conscious products to lead the way, and so Swedish Stockings was launched. A forerunner in sustainably produced nylon stockings, Swedish Stockings produce beautiful pantyhose from recycled yarn. Our factories engage in sustainable practices including the use of environmentally friendly dyes, post-dyeing water treatment and the use of solar power for much of the energy needed in the manufacturing process." Linn Frisinger and Nadja Forsberg, Swedish Stockings Founders

End of Life: Stocking Recycling Club

Biome is proud to introduce the Stocking Recycling Club. Simply donate in store or post us 3 pairs (any brand) of old/ripped/unwearable stockings and receive a 10% discount to be used on any Swedish Stocking products online. Stockings will then be gathered and sent to Swedish Stockings.

"We want to close the loop and eventually be able to fully recycle old hosiery. However, to make that possible we need to be able to separate the polyamide in the yarn (a.k.a the nylon) from the elastane (the stuff that makes it nice and stretchy) to make new pantyhose. Unfortunately, this technology isn’t commercially available just yet although it isn’t far away.

In the meantime, we have a short term solution. We are grinding old pantyhose down to be used as filler material in fibre glass tanks for oil and grease traps, in the commercial industry. These tanks are extremely hard wearing and last a long time, which is an amazing use of discarded pantyhose! Glamorous, no. Sustainable, yes! As long as they don’t end up in a landfill - we are committed to cleaning up the whole industry." - Swedish Stockings
