*end of life:

The supplier states that this floss is 'compostable' but please note that PLA plastic is only proven to compost in industrial composting facilities, which are not accessible to most householders in Australia.

In Australia, any product making a claim such as compostable or biodegradable on the packaging must ensure that the claim can be substantiated.  At this time, we have not received what we believe is sufficient substantiation to verify the claim of the compostability.  However, the supplier has given an undertaking that Eco Floss is home compostable based on their testing.

As Eco Floss has not been certified as home compostable it may not meet the requirements of those wanting an assured zero waste product.

In order to compost, PLA products require high heat, sufficient moisture and time to completely break down into carbon dioxide, water and a small amount of humus, a soil nutrient.  Without those conditions, PLA may not break down, such as in landfill. Eco Floss is a thin string so it may require less time than a coffee cup or piece of cutlery made from PLA, but it will still need certain conditions which may or may not be achieved in home compost.  According to the manufacturer of the PLA string, it may be the case that it will break apart into smaller pieces but may not compost.

PLA is polylactic acid which is made from corn starch.  According to the manufacturer of the PLA a mix of non GM and GM corn grown in the USA is used.

what is the difference between biodegradable and compostable?

Biodegradable means the material will completely break down into the natural elements of carbon dioxide (methane), biomass and water vapour within a year or less after disposal.  Materials such as petrochemical plastic take hundreds of years to biodegrade.

Composting is an accelerated version of biodegradation producing a rich humus that adds nutrients to the soil.

how does PLA compost?

Polylactic acid is a repeating chain of lactic acid. In the composting process, moisture and heat in the compost pile split the polymer chains apart, creating smaller polymers, and finally, lactic acid. Microorganisms in the compost or soil consume the smaller polymer fragments and lactic acid as nutrients. Since lactic acid is widely found in nature, a large number of organisms metabolise lactic acid. The end result of composting is carbon dioxide, water and humus, a soil nutrient.  But the effectiveness of this process is dependent on the required temperature and moisture.

Great smile? You betcha!

This has to be the best dental floss ever! There is no doubt this is far superior than the garbage you buy in the supermarket, which actually is pretty rubbish at flossing - which you only come to realise after using this floss!! It even gets rid of stubborn tartar (no lie) - make sure that you do it correctly i.e. don't do the old fashion way of sawing backwards and forwards - not correct. You actually slide it up and down the side of the tooth, while slightly pulling towards the tooth you are cleaning. And the best thing about it is the minty, non-toxic taste :) Thanks guys for making this product and thanks Biome for making it available. Thumbs up? Absolutely :)

A little pricey but it does a good job

It's expensive for floss but I found that it works well for my teeth - they aren't overly crowded or close together. I sometimes have trouble getting it between my teeth that are a bit more impacted on each other, but it has never broken on me before. It definitely gets all the gunk between my teeth/gums out. It does take slightly longer to cut the floss off as the cutting lip is quite shallow. Love the peppermint taste and the small glass container. I do keep mine in the cardboard container that it came in as the top is exposed and I find that unhygienic to just leave it in my drawer/bag. It's definitely decent value compared to other eco flosses out there.

Disappointing Dental Floss

I just got this today. I liked the minimalist packaging and refillable jar design. That’s where the compliments end. This dental floss is too weak for the job of giving your teeth a good flossing (it kept breaking). Plus it left little threads between some teeth and it’s annoying to try and get rid of these. I do not feel as far as dental floss goes that this is worth the money paid for it. Didsappointing!

Amazing zero-waste floss!

At first this floss was a little odd to use given the texture of the wax coating, but over time I have come to love it! Its thickness makes my teeth feel especially clean afterwards. Would recommend for anyone looking to invest in some compostable floss. Just make sure the composting system you use is suitable for breaking down the floss.

Breaks too easily

Disappointed that this plastic free floss was too fragile to use effectively. It would break very easily and leave little fibres stuck between teeth. Shame because it's beautifully presented!
