One of the challenges we often face when making the decision to start incorporating more ethical and sustainable garments into our wardrobe is the price. The truth is there are very valid reasons behind why most eco friendly garments are more expensive than cheap fast fashion ones.

When taking into account the price of fair labour, high quality natural/organic fabrics and smaller production runs, it’s easy to see how these factors quickly become reflected in the price tag.

    But not any more.

Ethical, eco friendly wardrobe basics do exist and they are available now at Biome.

    Introducing Dorsu

We at Biome are thrilled to have recently discovered a brand that not only embodies all of these Slow Fashion values but has also managed to create a range of beautiful basics at an affordable price. We are excited to introduce Dorsu into the mix for our Slow Fashion Department.

“Dorsu is about being real. We are people making clothing for people, embodying a conscious and mindful lifestyle. We are committed to challenging the current global fashion industry through a strong and progressive business model, the production of well designed clothing and a voice of inclusive conviction.” – Dorsu

    Make Less, Buy Less

Dorsu are champions of the slow consumption movement, which is why they design and produce only small, limited runs as opposed to giant collections. They release no more than a handful of items every 8 weeks in direct response to customer demands. This intentionally goes against the fast fashion model of having new styles created and released almost every day.

“We don’t believe in consuming mass amounts of clothing per year, therefore we don’t believe in producing it.” Dorsu

Each collection is designed to be long lasting, functional and versatile, meaning each garment blends easily into almost any existing wardrobe and are great for travel. Their Core Collection is made up of seasonless basics in block colours, which are available year long at a consistent and accessible price.

Their Reflection range features small-batch runs of 3-4 cohesive garments designed to compliment pieces from their Core Collection. They are often influenced by customer feedback or created in collaboration with people who inspire them. They feature limited edition colours whilst remaining versatile, functional and beautiful.

    Who Makes My Clothes?

Dorsu started out in 2008 as a two-person concept and has since grown into a small but thriving company. All Dorsu garments are produced on site at the Dorsu Studio in Kampot, Cambodia. This means that all designing, sampling, cutting, sewing and packaging is done in-house. Dorsu is passionate about creating positive, safe and fair employment experiences for every member of their team.

They are also transparent about what they offer their staff, as seen below:

    • A 9-hour workday that includes a 1-hour lunch and two 15 minute breaks.
    • Entry-level wages that exceed the Cambodian garment industry’s legal minimum by 30%.
    • A 9 hour workday that includes a 1 hour lunch and two 15 minute breaks.
    • Monthly performance-based bonuses.
    • A 5-day work week. (Cambodia typically has a 6-day work week), with an optional 6th day at overtime rates.
    • Accrued annual leave plus paid national holidays.
    • Illness & personal leave, as well as maternity and paternity leave.
    • Annual review of permanent contracts.
    • Required on-the-job safety training and equipment maintenance.

    What is Remnant Fabric?

Remnant fabric is a term that refers to unused rolls of fabric that have been rejected or left over from the fashion industry and discarded as “pre-consumer waste”. Reasons big fashion brands might reject fabric could be as simple as a change in trends or design direction and now the colour is no longer suitable. This attitude results is mass amounts of resources and fabrics being wasted each year, which is another reason why Dorsu only uses remnant fabrics for their collections.

“Our fabric is remnant cotton jersey sourced from fabric suppliers in Phnom Penh. The fabric is sold into a local supply chain and we personally head to the warehouses to source high quality, cotton jersey in limited amounts. We burn test each roll, ensuring that it has very minimal or no synthetic fibres” Dorsu

    Our top picks

Below are our favourite styles, chosen by Biome staff. Dorsu has quickly become our go-to staff uniform at our online HQ thanks to their comfortable and classic designs.

    Dorsu relaxed tank dress

A best seller of Dorsu’s for more than two years now, the Relaxed Tank Dress is a reliable wardrobe staple. Dorsu has updated this edition by shortening the side split and flattening the neck line, both consistent pieces of feedback from their valued customers. Fit it however you prefer, loose and chilled, or sized down for a sleeker feel. Layer with a turtleneck in winter.

Dorsu men’s long sleeve pocket t-shirt

A comfortable long sleeve top that comes in classic black or white. Featuring a single pocket, this top can be worn alone or layered in the cooler months. Made from soft remnant cotton, ethically sewn in Cambodia.

The soft sage colour of this long sleeve top brings a pop of colour to an everyday outfit. This top is best for year-round layering on cool summer evenings and cold winter days. Style it half tucked into the Dorsu Culottes for a casual work look. Sleeves are ever so slightly fitted, so if you’re wanting a looser fit, go up a size.

    Dorsu slouch pant

The Slouch Pant is Dorsu’s best seller. Intentionally designed to balance workwear needs with the comfort of everyday pants they have fast become both a work and travel uniform for the Dorsu (and Biome) team and their customers. Lift high on the waist for a tailored feel or size up to wear slouchy on the hips.
