Eco ideas for rainy days

Rain can be heart-breakingly elusive in parts of Australia, though some of us have seen no shortage of water from the sky. Not only is it important to keep a household emergency kit prepared, why not also have on hand a 'just for rainy days' kit (for kids and grown ups). Here's a wide choice of resources to help you stock your kit.
Above: Amazing Origami set, recycled cardboard building inspiration from Acorn Pies & re-sew-cool kits.
1. An origami set. We stock a couple (called Amazing Origami and Sweet Origami), but it could be some repurposed or recycled paper you've picked up along the way with some free internet instructions. The Australian Government has beautiful printable origami sheets and instructions for a Northern Corroboree Frog, a Pig-Nosed Turtle and an Australian Pelican to introduce kids to the importance of wetlands in Australia.
2. A recycled cardboard building set. Stash toilet rolls and small boxes as you come across them into a hidey spot only to be brought out "in-case-of-emergency" (i.e. storms), to maintain enthusiasm as a special treat. We found this wonderful castle inspiration from Acorn Pies.
Remember to keep tape, scissors and markers handy as well. Our wonderful MakeDo kits which let you do away with all that sticky tape! Oh, some of the kits are currently reduced too!
3. A craft kit. Building dexterity while making something practical can be great fun. Pull together a little collection of fabrics, buttons and threads (check out this great link for recommended equipment for a kids sewing kit). If you've never visited Reverse Garbage we recommend you check them out for colourful and interesting secondhand materials.
Don't have much time? Check out our wonderful re-sew-cool kits & support this amazing mum-run business.
