DIY Hand Sanitiser Spray

Ingredients

You'll also need 2 or more 10ml glass spray bottles, a small funnel, and a medium mason jar for mixing and storing. The idea here is to make about a cup of this mixture and once your spray bottle is low, refill! About the alcohol content It is important to understand the alcohol content of the substance you are using as this will affect the alcohol percentage of the final product. The World Health Organisation recommends at least 60% alcohol to protect against germs. Options are:
  • Pure Ethanol made from sugar cane – often 95% alcohol, 5% water. Most natural option but difficult to come by.
  • Ethanol (Denatured) - will contain a synthetic chemical as the denaturing agent to make it taste bitter.
  • Ethyl alcohol – the alcohol found in alcoholic drinks such as beer, brandy, or whiskey. See note below on vodka.
  • Isopropyl alcohol - as purchased in pharmacies (check the alcphol %)

Method

  1. Combine the ingredients in a mason jar and shake well.
  2. Using your funnel or a very steady hand, fill the spray bottles. Keep the remainder in the mason jar until you need to refill.

How to Use

Shake well, spray onto hands and rub them together. Use plenty to cover all the surfaces of your hands. Rub around hands until dry. Keep out of sunlight in a cool dry place. Use within 6 months.
