Lava Living is a small business run by Brisbane-based artist Kirsten Bailey. Kirsten works with plant-based natural textiles and uses traditional Shibori and Indigo dyeing techniques to present a modern interpretation of ancient crafts. Shibori is a resist dye technique that began in Japan approximately 4000 years ago. Traditionally Shibori textiles are dyed with Indigo which was once referred to as 'Blue Gold' as it was such a valuable trading commodity in the ancient world.
Biome acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation (Burwood), Bundjalung, Yugambeh and Koombumerrii people (Southport), and Yuggera and Turrbul people (Meanjin / Brisbane) as the traditional owners and custodians of the land that we work on. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
