Bahen & Co works with and purchases directly with the cacao farmers. By paying direct and cutting out the middle person, they exceed Fair Trade and pay prices that respect the farmer's efforts. They have searched for rare varieties of heritage cacao that produce the finest of flavours.

The Bahen & Co team have personally verified that no children work on the farms.

you are making a difference:

  • Single origin cacoa sourced direct from the farmer with assurance from Bahen & Co that the farmers are paid a high price and there is no child labour used.  These are small village plantations where the children go to school.
  • Preserving old existing plantations is important as the tree often grows as part of a diversified food production system along with many other crops. Such a system aids biodiversity and soil sustainability.
  • Bahen & Co goes to great lengths to understand and review the sustainability of its growers’ practices and to ensure a long-term farming model.  The the average price it pays for cacao significantly exceeds the pricing levels dictated by the existing certified schemes.

what about fair trade certification?

The founders of Bahen & Co do not insist on third party certifications in the form of Fair Trade or Rain Forest Alliance for example, as in their opinion in some cases the insistence on compliance with these systems has created a perverse incongruity – the most impoverished of growers and often those adhering to the most sustainable and traditional practices are not in a position to pay the cost of accreditation. In some cases growers future viability is threatened by over reliance by first world consumers on the dubious benefits of an externally imposed regime that in its compliance requirements excludes the most vulnerable and marginalized of third world subsistence farmers.

About Bahen & Co

Former work as a scientist, in a foreign aid development, and winemaker has seeded in Josh Bahen an attention to detail and understanding that achieving simplicity in chocolate making is harder than complex. Taking a simplistic approach to respect flavour and connect back to the source.

Restored from a vintage age and lead by a 1930’s Barth Sirocco Ball Roaster and circa 1910 Guitard Melangeur, the chocolate machines operate slow and cool with the wisdom needed to preserve the taste of distant places.

A traditional approach to chocolate making that returns to a slower pace of a previous time.
