"Leaf Litter gives children of all ages a new way to see the world, and helps them to realise that each part affects all others." Jackie French.

Leaves, twigs, branches and bark collect on the ground in forests all over the world. We call it leaf litter, but it isn′t really rubbish at all. If you look closely at leaf litter you will discover a world of animals and plants living side by side, a busy secret world we hardly ever see.

Rachel Tonkin's latest children's book is interactive (with flaps to lift to discover surprises hidden beneath the soil) and highly informative. The book features a list of "Things to Find" for each page, and a glossary to help parents and children alike with the terminology. Impeccably researched, Leaf Litter offers something for children of all ages.

So much happens on each page, that your child will want to read it over and over again. It can be used by teachers in the classroom as a wonderful resource to explore the fragility of our ecosytem. An accompanying teachers' guide is available from the Publisher's web site.

Leaf Litter was the Winner of the Wilderness Society's Environment Award for Children's Literature; as well as being shortlisted for the Children's Book Council Of Australia award.

Paperback. 32 pages. Approx. 36.5cm x 23.5cm.

05/02/2011 Rebecca D. Wonderful book to teach about the intricate ecosystems of leaf litter. Beautifully detailed pictures with flaps to lift and glossary of terms at the back. It also has a list at the back of things to find on each page, and each page has a paragraph which gives information on what is happening in each picture.

The book revolves around the one scene, where each page is a little time later and various things have happened (such as mice burrowing and moving in, a lizard corpse decaying with the help of micro-organisms, plants growing etc.). Beautiful book.
