How a Cleansing Oil Can Help Your Skin & Our Planet

How a Cleansing Oil Can Help Your Skin The idea of cleansing your face with oil may seem counter-intuitive, especially if you have oily or combination skin. However, a cleansing oil is actually an effective way to remove grime and makeup, without stripping the moisture from the skin and leaving you with that tight, tingly feeling of many cleansers. What's even better is that our cleansing oils do not contain palm oil nor palm oil derived ingredients. They suit all skin types, being excellent for removing excess sebum from pores for oily, acne prone skin, and providing conditioning and nourishment for dry skin. Acne.org explains the benefits of the oil cleansing method (OCM):
Fact: Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principals of chemistry is that “like dissolves like.” The best way to dissolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil, is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: Other oils. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin. When done properly and consistently, the OCM can clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne–while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.

Cleansing oils lift impurities from the skin without without harming the skin's barrier

While it may seem daunting at first, the idea of using oils to cleanse the skin does make sense. Cleansing oils work with your skin, not against it. Essentially, when massaged into the skin, oils in the cleanser bind to surface impurities and pull the impurities out without clogging pores. The impurities can be rinsed away and the skin is left feeling clean, soft, and hydrated.

Our cleansing oils do not contain glycerine or other palm oil derived ingredients

Most cream, gel and foaming cleansers on the market contain glycerine. Glycerine is a form of sugar alcohol that is available naturally in all vegetable oils and is also the by-product of soap making. There is nothing wrong with glycerine - it is in fact very beneficial for the skin and hair with its moisturising properties, plus it helps to remove dead skin cells. What does pose a problem, however, is that glycerine is often derived from palm oil, as well as some 200 other ingredients that contain palm oil derived glycerine, such as Polyglyceryl Dipolyhydroxystearate, Caprylic Triglyceride and Cetyl Alcohol. Palm oil monoculture is responsible for catastrophic deforestation, habitat destruction and wildlife deaths, including orangutans, in Indonesia and Malaysia, and as an ethical business Biome does not support products that contain palm oil. Read more about our ground breaking strict stance on palm oil here > The cleansing oils and other facial cleansers that we sell at Biome have been carefully selected and verified palm oil free, containing no palm oil or palm oil derived ingredients. We also sell a beautiful Certified Organic palm oil free glycerine for DIY skin care.

Won't cleansing oil make me break out?

Dermatologists remind us that oil alone does not lead to pimples, cysts, blackheads and whiteheads. Instead, blemishes are the result of several different factors, including hormones, bacteria, and the build up of dead skin cells. Your skin naturally produces oil because it needs it, and it is there for the benefit of your skin. Cleansing oils can be beneficial for oily, combination and acne prone skin. Many oil-free cleansers can strip our skin of natural oils, leaving it unbalanced. In turn, the skin starts to produce more oil to rebalance itself, which may actually lead to more blemishes and congestion. Oil cleansers, however, gently cleanse the skin while keeping the skin's natural pH in balance.
