This is timely for me as my second little girl was born 3 months ago and I am starting to think about how to approach solids in a few months time. My toddler is a bit fussy and I want to really work hard on getting her sister into a wide range of food as she grows in order to try and avoid the fussy if at all possible! I will start with things like sweet potato and pear puree, and I’m hoping to get some chia seeds in there. How does that sound? I need to research it a bit more and find out the best way of adding these to her diet, but if they can go in smoothies I’m thinking they could work in a puree. We shall see. Would SO love to win this pack, thanks for the chance!
My 6month old girl has some allergies to wheat and dairy and puree foods are easy to do with fruit and veg but i found it hard to find chewing things like rusk and i come across this great recipe for home made wheat and dairy free rusks
3/4 cup rice flour
1/4 cup Nuttelex (milk free butter)
2 tablespoons of puree vegetable or fruit
-Combine all ingredients to form a stiff dough, add a little water if needed.
-Roll into 6cm fingers and place on a lined baking tray.
-Cook for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned.
-Leave to cool and store in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.
Best recipes are often the simplest. Favourite combinations of stewed fruit or vegetables, steamed and pureed or mashed veges, non-salt/sugared versions of adult meals, home made rusks or spreading purees on toast. I find it hard to pick a favourite but I could probably narrow it down to stewed apple or pumpkin. Simple yes but at the time my husband didn’t eat pumpkin lol so it was the only time I had the opportunity to eat beautiful golden orange steamed pumpkin
DELICIOUS pumpkin soup:
approx. 1 Butternut Pumpkin, 3-4 Large Carrots, 1 Large Onion 1 Medium Sweet Potato, 3 Large Potatoes.
1. Cut vegies into chunks and fry in frypan until just starting to brown. Place all ingredients into a large pot.
2. Add water to level of the vegies in the pot. Bring to a boil, then turn down and cover to boil lightly.
3. After all vegetables are cooked and softened, use a hand blender or mixer to puree the vegetables all together (or put it all through a regular blender and place it all in a large bowl when done).
4. Serve with a dollop of cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg if desired, stir and enojy!
This is a recipe that the whole family will love and can be given to babies from the first stages of eating solids, right through.
Babe No. 1 never had pureed food, he just ate from our plate. And now babe No.2 at 8 months is self weaning earlier than I had anticipated, wanting anything and everything we eat. Having said that, I do make sure our family meals are baby friendly. One thing I have discovered in the past few months is chia pudding. We have it for dessert and babe No.2 just loves it.
Just use 500ml of any milk of your choice for the base, add some vanilla flavour (I use powder), a tiny bit of sweetener such as agave or maple syrup if required (depends on the type of milk you use – some are sweeter than others), then stir in 4 tablespoons of chia seeds. Leave in the fridge for about 4 hours, give a good stir and serve in glasses. Voila!
ps. hommus on sourdough is a hit with our babes as well!
My 6 month old goes mad for pumpkin and lamb with rosemary. I roast organic butternet pumpkin with a few while sprigs of rosemary. Then I grill some tbone lamb chops, cut the meat off (and give him one to suck on….which he also loves!) and puree the meat with the pumpkin (removed rosemary).
Hubby tasted some yesterday when feeding Bubs to check the temperature and he said it was sweet, deliciously lamby and with a lovely hint of rosemary.
A puree of avocado and banana. Easier in a blender but can just be mashed with a fork.
I guess to begin with Purees- boil fruit or veg with minimal water. Once cool, blend (or in my case spend what seems like hours mashing with a fork) and serve to baby. Yummy! Rather than boil can mash them fresh Like avocado, banana, mangoes, raspberres! Can also some cinnamon or almond meal/flaxseeds too…
When ready to progress to the next step we can get more creative:
Tiny Mushy Meatballs with Mash- to make meatballs combine mince (finely squised with above fork) and grated zuchinni, carrot, capsicum, garlic, cumin, ginger and turmeric. Roll into 10cent piece balls. Sauce- mashed tomatoes, mushrooms, basil, corriander, tiny bit water. Add balls to sauce and cook/boil til soft. Serve with potato, pumpkin and sweet potato mash!
And lastly a nice healthy, sensory and explorative meal- cous cous and vegies! Boil carrot and beetroot with spinach. Set aside. Cook cous cous. Once cool add vegies and stir in! The softness of veggies combined with softness of couscous makes an extremely yummy meal!! Good to squish between fingers (an apparently good to throw on floor)!
My little girl is almost 8 months now and at the moment her favourite meal is risoni with mixed vegetables. And for her sweet tooth pureed apple and pear with crushed biscuits.
Risoni with Mixed Vegetables
1 red capsicum, 1 zucchini, 310g can corn kernels, 400g crushed tomatoes, 2 tablespoons risoni
1. Cook capsicum in medium heated frying pan with a little bit of butter. Add zucchini and corn; cook stirring for two min.
2. Add can of crushed tomatoes stirring occasionally for 15 min or until vegetables have softened.
Cook risoni in small saucepan of boiling water until tender.
3. Mix risoni with vegetable mixture.
This is a great recipe to get the little ones used to something with a bit of texture
Always a hit with Emmy and i have even used the sauce in cooking chicken parma for me and my husband.
We are skipping purees with my son and going with finger foods straight away. He started with avocado fingers and steamed (or baked) pumpkin, carrot, etc. He also loves lamb cutlets with their little “handle”. Now he likes to taste everything off our plates and loves everything, from quiche to mushrooms on toast! I made these banana muffins as a treat this weekend and they were a hit with everyone:
- 2 ripe bananas
- 1/3 cup coconut oil
- 6 eggs
- 2 tbsp rice malt syrup
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 cup coconut flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
1) Mash bananas and whisk with wet ingredients until combined.
2) Stir together dry ingredients. Add to the wet ingredients.
3) Pour into muffin tray (makes about 6 large ones). Bake at 180 for 25 minutes.
4) Enjoy!
Bec’s Baby Dhal Recipe (suitable from about 9 months of age)
Ingredients:
1 cup brown rice (soaked overnight prior to cooking, to make it easier for baby to digest)
1 cup red split lentils
1 stock cube (salt reduced)
1 teaspoon garam masala
half teaspoon turmeric
half an onion chopped
1 clove garlic crushed
2 cm ginger grated
1 knob butter or ghee
Method:
First cook the brown rice using absorption method – add 2 cups water, bring to boil then simmer about half an hour until cooked.
Wash lentils thoroughly in cold water, drain and set aside. Add butter or ghee to a medium saucepan, and once melted add garlic, ginger and onion and cook for a couple of minutes. Add turmeric and garam masala and stir for one minute. Add the lentils and stir for one minute. Add stock cube dissolved in roughly 2 cups of boiling water, stirring continuously. Keep some water handy – whenever the water starts to become absorbed, add some more until the lentils start to lose their shape and come together.
For a younger baby, add the dahl to the rice and puree. From about 10 months you can mash it together thoroughly with a fork instead.
My 10 month old loves this and the best thing for me is that it’s easy, it’s cheap, and I usually have the ingredients on hand. You will get a few serves out of it, so make sure to freeze into portions and label with the date you made it!
My son’s favourite meal at the moment is poached fish in an old classic white sauce, make the white sauce , flake the fish and I often add some spinach. He gobbles it down and absolutely loves it!
Easy and delicious providing good fats, fibre, calcium and vitamin c. Perfect for a growing baby.
Mashed banana
Tablespoon on LSA
Tablespoon of fresh orange juice
2 tablespoons of non sweetened yogurt
Mix all together and enjoy.
thank you so much!!!!
